—> WHAT TO KNOW: Asteroid 2002 JX8 will make its closest approach at 11:02 GMT, cruising by at just 2.6 million miles away. NASA says it qualifies as “potentially hazardous,” but this flyby is a safe one.
—> HOW TO WATCH: The Virtual Telescope Project will livestream the encounter starting at 4:30PM EDT. They’ll also show Vesta, another giant rock currently lighting up the sky.
—> WHY IT MATTERS: There are 4,700 known “city killers” orbiting near Earth. Most won’t hit us—but the ones that could are the reason we keep our eyes (and telescopes) on the stars.
