hello future, it’s me kev.

…and this is a dispatch from the digital frontier. Your one-stop shop for markets, tech and the future. The day is 253. The year is 2024. The planet is Earth. And my name is Kevin Cirilli. Last night, Saturn was at its ‘biggest and brightest’ position of the year. [Here’s why.] It’s a good reminder that we should be paying more attention to our neighboring planets. On the way to Saturn, you have to pass through Mars, the Asteroid Belt, and Jupiter.

Jupiter, btw, has 95 moons. Can you imagine? But my second favorite speck in our Solar System (after Earth, of course) has always been Europa — Jupiter’s special moon. Europa one day could be where we as a species end up… what if the Moon and Mars were just pits stops begin built along the way to get there?

Now, back to Earth

O’BRIEN: WHY I’M A TECH OPTIMIST

mtf.tv’s Chair of Global Innovators Lt. Gen. Mary F. O’Brien (Ret.) offers a fresh dispatch from the digital frontier each week.

BY MARY F. O’BRIEN, LT. GEN. (RET.), CHAIR OF GLOBAL INNOVATORS

Welcome back to another edition of meet the future NOW! Last week, I attended the 15th Annual Billington CyberSecurity Summit, and let me tell you, it was a fascinating experience. The rooms were buzzing with energy…or was it the caffeine from the bottomless coffee bars…but what jumped out at me was the clear divide between two groups: the "technology optimists" (myself included) and the "technology doom and gloomers." If you had to guess, you'd probably think the latter group dominated the conversation—and you'd be right. It was a Cyber SECURITY event after all. Here's why you won’t find me joining the ranks of the doom and gloomers.

You see, cybersecurity is crucial not because technology is some dark force we need to shield ourselves from, but because of the incredible value it can bring to our lives…if we let it. Every day, we leverage the internet and cyber-related technologies to improve the way we live, work, and especially our ability to connect. Take it from me—a mom who spent a good portion of her career juggling the demands of the military while using every available tool to keep the wheels turning at home and stay connected to my Marine Corps husband on the other side of the globe.

I'll never forget when I was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan in 2014. My 5th-grade son, with his most serious face, asked, "Mom, will you have access to WiFi and the internet?" I assumed he wanted to know if he could talk to me when he missed me during my year away so I assured him that I would have WiFi most of the time. Wrong assumption! His response? "Great, we’ll be ok! You can still register me for lacrosse, order my saxophone reeds, and do almost everything you do for us now…except bake banana bread."

I had to laugh, and at that moment, I also appreciated the technology that would lower my "mom guilt" by allowing me to stay connected to my family's everyday life, even from thousands of miles away. (Don’t ask my son how he felt about my ability to check his grades in the school portal).

Of course, we can't ignore the risks. The digital world vulnerabilities are real, but they are not insurmountable: the majority of these risks are within our control to manage today. Try approaching cybersecurity with the mindset of an optimist—one who recognizes that the benefits of technology far outweigh the risks, and that those risks can be mitigated through knowledge, tools, and expertise. The real challenge might be maintaining our focus on the positive impact of technology while taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves so we don’t scare people into thinking they should avoid incorporating technology into their lives.

The doomers might see cybersecurity as a battleground, but despite more than three decades in the military, I don’t see it that way. I view it as a way to unlock the full potential of our digital future. It's time for technology optimists to shift the narrative from fear to empowerment and bridge the gap with technology doomers to alleviate their concerns and bring more people over to the optimistic side.

Perhaps optimists could do a better job highlighting the tangible benefits of technology in ways that resonate with doomers. For example, by sharing relatable success stories—like how telemedicine is now helping millions—people may better understand the positive impact technology can have on their daily lives.

So, let’s meet the future with confidence, knowing that we have the power to shape it. If we embrace the cybersecurity tools at our disposal and stay informed about emerging threats, we can ensure that technology continues to be a force for good in our lives.

After all, isn't that what it's all about? Ensuring that technology serves us, not the other way around.

Big tech’s ‘tobacco moment’? Durov, Musk, and the geopolitical taming of tech CEOs

These high-profile cases may point to signs of a broader shift in tech and geopolitics, reports ArabianBusiness.com’s Tala Michel Issa:

SPEED READ: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov arrested in Paris for allegations he failed to prevent criminal activity on his platform. Musk in a spat with Brazil after the country banned X. These two high-profile incidents are the latest in the ongoing friction between national sovereignty and the free-spirited internationalism brought on by technological innovation.

Mike Bloomberg: Tech and talent are the keys to defense modernization

Michael Bloomberg, chair of the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Board (and Kev’s former top top top boss), writes in an op-ed for DefenseScoop:

The Pentagon established the Defense Innovation Board, which I have the honor of chairing, to help the department build its relationships outside of government and beyond the existing defense industry. Our role is to conduct independent research and interviews, and then offer recommendations for change to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and other senior leaders. In many cases, the capabilities that the department needs already exist. The difficulty lies in adopting and scaling them.

AFRICA AND A.I.

LAGOS, via Reuters — “Artificial intelligence and traditional aid are helping farmers like Salihu Ali in northern Nigeria act before their farms are submerged by increasingly regular floods fuelled by climate change… Ali was warned that floods were coming in 2022 and was provided with cash to prepare his farm… [through the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm].”

INVESTMENT:

He was among 1,450 families who were given US$450 (RM1,944) in [a pilot project], which relied on AI to develop flood forecasting models based on large amounts of data, ranging from satellite information to historical events to river levels.

BOTTOM LINE:

The idea is simple: harness AI to predict floods before they happen and give communities cash before the waters rise so they can prepare their farms and limit the damage to their homes.
